"The Punk Syndrome" is a documentary that's following 4 mentally handicapped men, and their punk rock band Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, from obscurity to popularity. The road to where Pertti, Kari, Toni and Sami are today seems to have been quite bumpy:
"We watch them fight, fall in love and experience strong emotions. We witness long days in the recording studio and on tour. They laugh, cry, drink and fight over who gets to sit in the front on the tour bus..."
The Finnish State Award is not the first prize this documentary has won. It has also won the Audience Award at Tampere Film Festival and the Special Prize Swiss Post at Visions du Réel.
mtok hasnt seen the documentary (yet), but you do get touched by their genuine passion for music just by watching the trailer and the 7 episodes about their tour to Germany! I also want to end this post with this quote:
“In Kallio I see drunks, drug addicts, rock musicians and police officers every day. The song ‘Kallioon’ is my view on life in Kallio. It takes a couple of minutes to write lyrics for a song, and I find the subjects in society and the way I look at the world.”
